Blondie's Kitchen Milk & Cookies Pop Up Bar Launching In Selfridges

Following the success of their Old Street Station pop-up, Blondies Kitchen have debuted their first retail collaboration with Selfridges, with their hugely popular Milk & Cookie bar launch on Monday 1st May. The new pop-up is part of Selfridges ‘Our House’ campaign which celebrates ‘a tastes of home’.

For one month only, the blonde baking duo will be dishing out their American-style milk and cookies to anyone who needs a sweet pick-me-up. Among the six types of chewy cookies on offer, the brand-new Raspberry & Coconut Cookie and Frosted Flakes Cereal Milk is available exclusively at the Selfridges’ Foodhall pop-up - a limited edition pairing not to miss out on. We went down for a little ‘taste’ of the action and caught up with the Blondies themselves between mouthfuls of deliciousness.

Can you tell us a little bit about how Blondies Kitchen was formed?

Myself and Kristelle started doing catering on the side together while we were both working full time. Kristelle head up the kitchen at a café in Primrose Hill while I was cookery writing for BBC Good Food. Before we knew it, we were getting booked up every weekend and we realized we worked really well together. We came up with the milk and cookie bar concept and decided to test the waters at our first pop up in Old Street station. The rest is history!

In a male dominated industry, how did you turn your passion into a fully-fledged career?

It wasn’t easy to make the decision to leave good jobs and start working for ourselves. We are both so passionate about our brand and our food so that’s how we’ve got to where we are today. We do laugh sometimes and say it’s not so easy to get taken seriously when people see we are a pair of small blondes. Our motto is ‘we’re Blondies Kitchen, not Bimbo’s Kitchen’ and looks can definitely be deceiving. I think once we start talking people realize we mean business!

What would your advice be to young women starting their own business?

Just go for it! You don’t get anywhere in life without taking a risk and we certainly took a risk. Persistence is definitely key and if you’re passionate about what you do, you will make it happen. Keep knocking those doors down.

The global success of programs like GGBO got families back in the kitchen and the nation talking about baking – what is it about food that bring people together?

Everyone’s got to eat. Some people eat to live and then others live to eat (they’re our kind of people). Our milk and cookies are so nostalgic (especially our cereal milk) so it’s a nice way to connect people to their memories. Food is memories, that’s what makes it so special and so subjective to each person.

Food is a global language and plays a pivotal role across all cultures. What countries have you visited that have most impacted your taste in food and how you cook?

We both went on a trip to New York separately and came back loving the hole in the wall food culture. We’ve tried to do one thing and do it really well with our milk and cookie bar. Its definitely an Americanised concept. In our day to day cooking, we take inspiration from around the world all the time. Even if we haven’t visited a particular country, social media has opened our eyes to so many cultures- we see what someone is doing in China and can think wow that looks amazing! Our inspiration is everywhere.

What are your top 3 most recommended restaurants in London right now?

We eat out constantly so this is a tough question! I love Padella pasta. Italian food is my favourite and again this is an example of doing 1 thing and doing it really well. For proper Italian pasta Padella in London Bridge is BANGIN’. Kristelle loves Asian food and recently visited Street XO- really cool menu with fun cocktails. Our third favourite is Balabya- great middle eastern sharing dishes packing a punch when it comes to flavour.

Why is Selfridges a great brand match for your Milk & Cookie pop-up bar?

Selfridges was a no brainer when they asked us to join their food hall offering for the month of May. We’d like to think we’ve created a premium brand, and we sell fresh hand crafted cookies. Selfridges offer something new and different and that’s exactly what we offer.

What’s the secret to a perfectly baked cookie – crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside?

Our cookies have a crisp edge, are chewy all the way through with a soft centre. We use quality ingredients, including Billington’s unrefined sugar, Allinson flour and Neilsen Massey vanilla. We also always ensure we bake the cookies for exactly the right amount of time so they always stay chewy.

How do you think social media has changed the food industry?

Social media has changed every industry, especially food! I mean what was life before foodporn?! Its definitely helped build a community of people who all love food and want to watch/share their thoughts on it. Even people who aren’t in the food industry care about viewing photos of videos of food, because everyone’s gotta eat, so you may aswell eat something REALLY good right?!

What’s next on the cards for Blondie Kitchen?

We’re excited to announce that we are partnering with Graduate fashion week and will be offering our milk and cookies there from 4th-7th June. We hope to have another pop up location in London and then eventually spread the cookie love far and wide. For more info go to www.blondieskitchen.co.uk.

Known for their delicious freshly-baked cookies with just the right amount of chew, crunch and ooze, Londoners can now find the blonde baking duo at Selfridges’ Foodhall from 9.30 to 21.00, Monday to Saturday and 11.30 to 18.00 on Sundays throughout the month of May. Their signature Cookie Icon - two classic milk chocolate cookies sandwiched together with an outrageous honeycomb chocolate mousse – is also back due to popular demand. Gluten-free and lactose-free diets are also catered for with the return of Gluten Who? peanut butter oats cookie and almond milk by Plenish.

Selection boxes will now be available, which are the perfect gift any cookie lover – but good luck sharing you’re going to want them all to yourself!
